Summary
John Chang received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at Stanford University. During medical school at Temple University School of Medicine, he pursued immunology training with Ethan Shevach as a National Institutes of Health-Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology, both at the University of Pennsylvania. He then undertook postdoctoral immunology research training in the laboratory of Steven Reiner at the University of Pennsylvania.
During his postdoctoral fellowship, John observed that T lymphocytes appear to undergo asymmetric division during immune responses against microbial pathogens. The discovery of asymmetric T lymphocyte division was recognized as one of the “Top Ten Scientific Breakthroughs of 2007” by Science.
John is a recipient of the AGA-FDHN Fellow to Faculty Transition Award (2007) and the University of Pennsylvania Division of Gastroenterology Frank Brooks Research Award (2007). John is currently funded by the HHMI Physician-Scientist Early Career Award and a NIH K08 Mentored Clinical Scientist Award.
